«Akrogiali» qui signifie au bout de la mer, porte bien son nom, puisque cette taverne se trouve a peine a 5m de la plage. C’est la plus ancienne taverne de la region de Kato Zakros. Le batiment a ete construit en 1898 et s’appelait Maria. En 1991 Nikos Perakis et sa femme Tania ont repris l’entreprise et offrent a leur clientele des plats traditionnels cretois et grecs.
Ils attachent beaucoup d’ importance a la qualite des produits dont ils se servent preferant toujours la production locale. L’huile vient des oliviers de Nikos, les legumes sont achetees chez les agriculteurs locaux et la viande chez les eleveurs de la region.
En ce qui concerne les poissons frais ce sont les pecheurs Manolis, Giorgos et Costas qui nous les fournissent directement de leurs barques. Pendant l’ete,il se pourrait que vous rencontriez des ceremonies de mariage, de bapteme ou d’autres fetes ou on s’amuse en dansant et en ecoutant de la musique traditionnelle jusqu’ au matin. Le visiteur a la possibilite de connaitre l’hospitalite et les coutumes de la region.
Alors a cote de la mer, vous nous trouverez prets a vous accueillir des le matin et vous servir votre petit dejeuner, du cafe ou du jus et plus tard un verre de biere ou d’ouzo avec des petits plats (mezedes). Pendant que vous vous baignerez ou que vous prendrez votre bain de soleil nous vous preparerons le dejeuner comme vous le desirez avec le vin de votre choix.
L’apres-midi vous pouvez prendre votre glace en regardant la mer et le soir vous pouvez contempler le coucher du soleil en dinant. Nikos peut vous donner divers renseignements puisqu’il parle quatre langues (Anglais, Allemand, Francais, Italien).

When we're on tour in Crete we dont't miss to go for lunch to the Akrogiali Tavernea because Food, especially fish fresh from the catch, meat from the grill and local specialities, are all excellent and the staff is exceptionally amiable - so we'll go there again and again and again!

I have tried different tavernas in Kato zakros and this one proved to be the best. I ordered the local grilled fish and greek salad which were excellent. The service was very nice and helpful!
